the alternator will be on the end of the engine that has the drive belts or serpentine belts, alternators are belt driven.
You need to loosen the belts by backing off the tensioners. Since this is difficult to describe I would suggest investing in a manual that has illustrations showing how it's done.

there should be two major bolts to the alternator one to losse'n up the belts and the other to release the alternator to the mount. loosen the belts first and then remove the belts.. after this it should be easy to replace the alternator
To change the alternator drive belt on a Bobcat 853 you start by lifting the cab. With the cab up, you can see the back of the engine and alternator. Locate the belts spring tensioner and release the belt.
Changing the alternator or removing and installing the belt should not cause excessive stress or wear on the belts.

I can't really say for sure about a '98, but I have a 99, and you just loosen the bolts on the alternator, move it forward, and switch old and new belts. Push the alternator back (with a rod) and retighten the bolts.
Loosen the belts, unbolt the old alternator, bolt the new one on, tighten the belts back up.
The alternator is driven by a belt. Follow the belts and you will find the alternator.
