You can generally clear codes in one of two ways:

1) Disconnecting the battery for a certain amount of time (30 minutes to be safe). This is NOT recommended as it can cause all sorts of problems with your car's electrical components and its computer.

2) Using a code reader scan tool (like the kind they lend free you at most major auto parts store) to read the code and then clear it. When you plug the tool into your vehicle and it reads the code(s), it will give you the option to clear them.

HOWEVER, Neither of these will allow you to pass an emissions test. Most states now rely on your car's OBDI II computer to tell them about your emissions system. If an emmissions related code (ex P0420) has been manually cleared, the computer will show that and you will NOT pass the test.

Oftentimes, a bad emission code can be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor(s) and your actual emissions are still within the legal limits. Unfortunately, it will not matter if, like most states, your state stipulates an OBDI II test. If you live in a state that allows the old fashioned "sniffer" test (actual measuring of the emissions), this may be your best bet to pass. If you do need to get your emissions system worked on, make sure you have the oxygen sensors tested for proper performance before you agree to replace your catalytic converter(s).

How can you test or erase the trouble codes manually on a 2001 Nissan Quest?

Borrow, rent or buy a good quality OBD2 code scanner. The good ones let you clear the codes. Any codes that WON'T clear are usually caused by a failed component that needs to be replaced.

How do you test code p1491?

To test code P1491, which typically pertains to an issue with the evaporative emission control system, you should start by using an OBD-II scanner to confirm the code and check for related codes. Next, inspect the EVAP system components, including the gas cap, hoses, and valves for leaks or damage. Perform a smoke test to identify any leaks in the system. Finally, clear the code, run the vehicle through a drive cycle, and recheck for any codes to ensure the issue is resolved.

What is the purpose of a vehicle emission test?

The purpose of a vehicle emission test is to make sure that a vehicle is not emitting harmful toxins into the air. What is tested for varies by state but mainly looks for carbon emission.

Where is the computer reset button on a 1999 dodge 1500?

This is an OBD2 system. To my knowledge the only possible way to reset the computer is to disconnect the battery. I'm not even sure this wll work. I've never heard of a reset button on these OBD2 systems. If you wanted to clear all the trouble codes then You'll need a handheld scanner tool (available at parts store). I don't recommend clearing the trouble codes until you have repaired the problem. Also once you clear the codes you'll have to drive the vehicle at least 100 miles before you have an emission test.
