Suburban - 1/2 ton 1987-1992 TH700-R4/4L60
Suburban - 3/4 ton 1987-1990 TH400/3L80

Check your steering coloumn. If it is factory and does NOT have the overdrive(the D outlined) then you probably have the TH400. You can also tell by the shape of the transmission pan and sometimes the pan has either a code or the actual "TH400" or "TH700-R4" stamped on it. Get underneath with a cameraphone and take a pic and go to the auto parts store or dealership.

There are three u-joints on an 88 suburban. These joints are located in the rear wheel drive of the vehicle.

Normally on the upper passenger side of the transmission. Find the vacuum hose coming from the engine to the transmission and you will find the valve.
One transmission that will fit a 1991 Chevy Suburban is a 4L80E transmission.
4L60E Transmission.
That would be the 4L80E transmission.

I had this happen on an 88 GMC Suburban. Took a while to find it. Turned out to be a ground wire under the dash
700 R4 transmission.
