To repair the odometer in a 1997 Ford Ranger, you'll typically need to access the instrument cluster. Start by disconnecting the battery and removing the dashboard cover to access the cluster. Then, remove the cluster from the dashboard, and inspect the gears and connections for any damage or disconnections. If the gears are broken, you may need to replace them or the entire cluster, and then reassemble everything, ensuring proper reconnections before testing the odometer functionality.

The odometer has failed. Unfortunately, there isn't realy any troubleshooting involved. The speedometer and the odometer run off the same input. In a nutshell the above is correct, because to fix it you have to replace it. I own a 1997 Mazda B4000, except for cosmetics....same truck. Found the answer myself today...in the instrument panel there are 3 clusters....the cluster with the tack, spedometer, odometer and trip odometer is where your issue lies....there is a plastic gear that wears out inside...be advised their is a great deal of labor involved in this project....I highly suggest a proffessional do this for you...also due to it being a plastic part, I would rather buy a new part from the dealer than take my chances at the local yard were the part has been exposed to the elements for however long. Their may be other issues involved, but his was my experience
