It's probably rusted on too so spray it generously with penetrant and let it sit for a little while. You need to buy a set of quick release tools usually 4 come in a set. pull down on filter place tool around filter tube push up until the filter is released. there are clips that hold the filter in place.
Until the engine will run without the choke being pulled.
Without an oil filter in place the engine oil would just be pumped out of the engine , so the engine would run until the engine seized
It will cause those and eventually will shut down your engine until the filter is changed or cleaned.
Disconnect the fuel pump, run the engine until it stops. After that remove the filter. Install new one. Connect the pump. Start the engine and check for leaks.
How long have you been driving without one? You fill it with new oil and mate the filter center hole to the engineg oil filter receptical bolt. Screw filter cockwise until it touches engine then add 3/4 turn again only. Passenger side between engine and firewall bottom of engine.
I remove the fuel pump fuse or relay while the engine is running. The engine will run until the pressure has dropped. Leave the fuse or relay out until you have finished replacing the fuel filter.

Only way that can happen is:- 1. No oil in engine. Highly unlikely, engines don't go far without it. Even if the engine is using a lot of oil and was nearly out there would still be oil in the filter. 2. Faulty filter put in at last service. Impossible, the engine would not make it to the next service. You are right to question it, you can run an engine without oil in the filter, until it melts. The man is having a lend of your Mom.
Open the glove box........in the rear of the dash box you will see a black cover which will pop out if pulled.....it is located in the rear upper area of the glove box.....pull gently until it comes off.....then remove the filter and replace.
