My 2000 Wrangler (4 cyl, 5 spd) had an intermittent "stumble" on hard acceleration, usually in 2nd and 3rd gear. No big deal, I just figured the engine was cold (usually the case), since it usually happened when I had a short uphill run onto a 55 mph highway once I left my house for work in the morning.
Yesterday the "Check Engine" light came on, and the "stumbling" on hard acceleration suddenly got much worse. I took the Jeep to an Action Auto store, where they checked the code from the OBD2 computer. The TPS is $41 from Action Auto, and the replacement isn't too difficult. Remove the air intake system off the top of the throttle body. Remove the connection to the TPS. Remove the four bolts holding the throttle body in place. Tilt the throttle body up to expose the the TORX head screws holding the TPS in place. Remove the TPS, and reverse all of the procedures to reinstall.
