To remove a broken bolt from an engine shaft of a lawn mower, first ensure the engine is off and cool. Use a center punch to create a small dent in the center of the broken bolt to help guide the drill bit. Drill a hole into the center of the bolt, then use an easy-out extractor to reverse-thread and pull the broken piece out. If necessary, apply penetrating oil beforehand to help loosen the bolt.

I need to know how to remove a bolt from a pulley assembly on a Briggs and Stratton 8 hp vertical lawn mower engine. It seems to be rusty. I tied DW40 and vise grips and shaft slips. Any suggestions?
First, what kind of engine? Second, are you talking about the output shaft? Typically the output shaft comes directly off of, or is part of, the crankshaft and the engine must be disassembled. However many engines use a geared reducer that can be removed from the engine simply with a few bolts. Determine the manufacture of your mower or the engine and go to their website, perhaps you can find a parts diagram that will give you an exploded view.
Use a puller so you do not bend the pulley.
remove the mowing deck this should be very simple just a few pins. then in th ebottom of the stack pulley shaft is a bolt you will need a deep well 5/8" socket to reach up inside the shaft remove the bolt and the pulley should slide down and off.
If it is the 3800 engine, it is located behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. You may need a special puller to remove the balancer. If it is the 2.8L engine. It is in the engine block between the engine blocks rt bank and the transaxle. It is very hard to remove this sensor. It has a tendancy to crack and break off which will force you to remove the oil pan to remove the broken peices.
You need to remove the underdeck to replace the belt.
The "timing shear pin" is in the shaft that holds the fly wheel. Hope this helps.
