If you are removing a rear wheel from a riding mower with a square keyway, there is no need to remove the keyway. The tire and rim will slide off with it in place. The rim is slotted all the way through. After removing the wheel you can simply grab it with pliers if you need to remove it for some reason.
The key is between the rim and the axle. It goes in the groove of the axle and rim. You will be able to see the grooves once you remove the cap, e-clip and washer on one of the wheels.
A keyway is located on the drive axle. It is used to stop the pulley from spinning on the axle. Most commonly the key way will be milled into the axle and a small square metal rod will sit inside the key way then the pulley will slide over the key and stop the pulley from spinning on the axle (angular movement), directly opposite the key way there will be a grub screw stopping the pully moving side to side (axial movement).

There is a plastic hubcap that needs removal first. Then an external snap ring needs removal. If you are luck, it will not be rusted to the axle and will slide off. There is a 2 inch long key that will either be in the wheel or the axle. Keep and eye out for it since it locks the wheel and axle together so that the machine will drive. Generally, you put the wheel on, line up the slot in the wheel to the one in the axle and put the key in.
Changing the front axle on an Infiniti QX4 involves several key steps. First, safely lift the vehicle and remove the front wheels to access the axle. Then, disconnect the axle from the differential and hub assembly, along with any necessary suspension components. Finally, replace the old axle with the new one, reassemble everything, and ensure all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer’s specifications.
