Your column is loose because of the ball bearing slodes in the unit. You can repir the column if your good with dismantleing things like that or you can get a used column for around 250$ and install it. After the lower dash trim is removed there are 5 wire plugs going to it that must be removed, first remove the retaning bolt that goes through the universal joint near floor....take this bolt all the way out and then slide the shaft out and down toward the floor. Then you can take out the remaining 4 bolts that hold up the unit. Pretty straight forward and simple....getting the column will be the hardest part......When installing another column you will want to use white lithium grease on all moving parts. The cheapest and easiest would probably to install a floor shifter. If you don't want to do that, you would have to almost completely dismantle the steering column.
They had a problem with the steering column shaft slip joint, it was too sloppy. They have a replacement part to cure that problem available at the dealer.
replace the worn parts.
Yes.
Most of the time it is the bushing in the top of the column. .Pull the steering wheel off, pull the locking plate for the steering wheel, pull the blinker assembly, then you will come to a stiff spring that preloads the bushing under it.....That bushing, and spring need to be replaced, and you have cured your problem. . . . .
The first thing to fail in the steering system are the idler arms - they do not have lube fittings from the factory. Change these and the steering will feel like new.
There is no adjustment on rack and pinion steering. If you're steering is sloppy or something I suggest you get an alignment and your front end checked.
You would hear clunking noises from up front when braking and steering. Steering may become sloppy and drift left or right.
Have the front end checked via a wheel alignment
Could be bad joints in the steering shaft, could also be bad tie-rod ends.
Most likely, the bushings on the shift lever have become worn and need to be replaced. If your Villager is equipped with air bags, this job is best left to a professional. There are components which must be removed in the steering wheel which could (if not properly disabled) deploy the air bag and do serious injury.
