Beverly, usually the seal is located behind the timing cover. The hard part is getting to the crank seal. Once you do...pry it out with a screwdriver. Grease the new one and install it over the crank with a socket that matches the diameter of the new seal and pound it in the groove. . John In Montana
Cost of a crank seal leak repair
It is on the front of the crank shaft. It seals the oil at the crank pulley.
Pull the balancer then the seal. NOT EASY
AnswerCheck the crank pully bolt. If it has come loose you will have a leak. The crank pully bolt does not have anything to do with the crank shaft seal leak. Thebolt is independent of the seal. To replace seal remove crank shaft pully and you will have access to crank shaft seal, pull out & replace seal.
YES ON ANY VECHICLE THE CRANK SHAFT SEAL CAN FAIL WITHOUT WARNING.
there should be an oil slinger on crank .this is to sling most of the oil away from the seal. is this installed facing the correct way. is the crank shaft damaged at all. you can buy what is called a speedy sleeve.this is a sleeve made to be installed on shaft and repair scratches and dings in shaft these are bought as a pair with a seal to match it. go to a seal and bearing shop to get the correct one other than that the only other reason seals keep going out is a bent shaft or really bad bearings
I believe it's called a trans-axle output shaft seal. Could also be the front differential pinion seal.
Failed seal.

The rear chankshaft seal is on the back end of the engine above the pan and at the rear of the crankshaft.
