I have now managed to take the alternator off the mount and adjujstment bracket. However, as I wrote below, the adjustment bracket needs to be removed before being able to remove the alternator from the engine compartment. Otherwise, you will not be able to remove it. You will have to turn it to find the best way to get it out, and, remember what way that was as when you put the new one in, you will need to put it in the same way.
I am currently looking at replacing my alternator. I have a hatchback '87 323. The first thing, unplug the negative from your battery. This will eliminate any current on the vehicle or engine compartment. Next, you will have to remove the alternator belt adjuster bracket, so you can get the alternator out. From there on, it should be fairly simple. The space is limited, so you may have to remove the alternator tightly against the manifold. Then, its home bound from there.
I have not done the whole work yet on mine as it just died today, but a little!
To change the alternator belt on a Mazda 323, first remove the right hand air shield under the can. Then locate the pulley tensioner of the AC and loosen the bolts on the pulley. Finally, remove the alternator pivot bolt under the alternator to remove the old alternator belt and replace with a new one.
This is from the Owners Handbook of my Mazda 323, 1996 : Alternator Drive Belt. 1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and adjusting bar bolt. Replace Fanbelt. 2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the correct tension is obtained. The deflexion should be 10mm. 3. Tighten bolts and recheck the tension.

The 1.6 liter Mazda firing order is 1-3-4-2 Distributor rotates counterclockwise.
First, disconnect the battery and then, remove the alternator and power steering belt, then the timing belt cover, the timing belt and the two pulleys, unscrew the pump bolts and that's it
Get a manual on your car and it will show you all of them and acquaint you with your car.
The front rotors need to be pressed on, if you know someone with an industrial press you can do it yourself.
For the 1998 Mazda 323, the alternator specifications typically depend on the engine type and trim. The PD designation generally refers to the 1.8L engine, while the MD designation is for models with the 1.6L engine. It's essential to verify the exact model and engine type when selecting an alternator to ensure compatibility, as the amperage output may vary. Always consult the vehicle's manual or a parts specialist for the correct alternator part number.
No sorry they are completely different.
