do you mean the aluminum bracket holding the alternator broke at the bolt holes? do you know that there should be a steel bracket BEHIND the alternator also? when engine usually replaced, sometimes this steel bracket is not replaced and instead a shorter bolt is used to fasten alternator (3 bolts) to aluminum bracket. there should be a longer bolt which goes from the front of the alternator on the left side, thru the alternator and thru that steel bracket and into part of engine?? this part not clearly understood as explained to me by mechanic husband. he had the same problem and corrected when bracket kit purchased from local Chevy dealer; about $197 in Hawaii. hope this bit helps...

there is small bracket that bolts on the back of the pump to the block some pumps are missing a stud for that bracket also check the big horse shoe bracket that bolts to the front of the block that all the asscesiories bolt to it could be cracked causing the bracket in question to break

Mine went out this month, the only real way was for my mechanic to "drop the axle, to get to the alternator from the bottom". Above is not entirely true. Here is a 1/2hr removal procedure. It is very simple, dont be intimidated. Did it on my nephews 89 accord From Top Remove battery Ground Remove top alternator nut/adjusting screw mechanism From Bottom Remove bottom hanger bolt THEN remove bottom bracket (2 bolts) Spin alternator around and remove plug and wiring Now at this point the only thing that wont allow the alternator to fall through of course is the axle. Look at the engine block just in front of the bottom bracket you just removed. There is an engine assembly hole casting. This loop casting that protrudes out is ONLY used to install the engine. A 4" grinder quickly slices this cast iron loop off. The Alternator will fall through with a little wiggling...worked awesome. DONT USE A HAMMER TO BREAK OFF THAT LOOP ...YOU MAY BREAK TO FAR...LOTS OF ROOM>>> GRIND IT.
