Removing the smog pump can affect the motor's performance by potentially increasing horsepower due to reduced parasitic drag on the engine. However, it can also lead to increased emissions, as the smog pump is designed to reduce harmful exhaust gases. Additionally, removing it may trigger a check engine light or fail emissions testing in regions with strict regulations. Ultimately, while there may be short-term performance benefits, the long-term consequences on environmental compliance and engine health should be considered.
Removing the smog pump on a 2.8 engine may be possible, but it's important to check local emissions regulations first. Removing the smog pump may lead to decreased performance and could cause issues with emissions testing. Consult with a professional mechanic for guidance.
Your best bet is to keep the smog pump in the truck. Just take the guts out of it, this will allow the pully to spin freely. Most states require the smog pump for inspection. Thank god it's only a visual.

If you have the 4.1 motor and its front wheel drive... Standing on the passenger side of the car looking at the front of the motor... The steering pump should be on top to the right...the next pully down closest to the radiator is your smog pump. I desperately need to know how to take it off without pulling everything. It seems the last bolt is right against the exaust. I also need to know the est.hrs. to replace the smog pump. cbdoc225 at yahoo.com
The 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora smog pump can be found on the left-hand side of the engine. The smog pump will be near the exhaust manifold.
The 1985 Ford Ranger smog pump is located on the firewall in the engine compartment. The smog pump will be on the drivers side of the firewall.
If facing the front of the truck, it is above the oil pan on the front left side. It is difficult to see from the top since the view is blocked by the alternator bracket and what appears to be a smog or air pump. If you are going to replace the fuel pump. plan on removing the alternator bracket and smog/air pump since the back bolt is impossible to get to without doing so. Then you can use a long extension with a flex attachment to get the socket to the bolt. Good luck because its not easy...
A belt driven or electric motor air pump pumps fresh air into exhaust system before the catalytic converter.
Yes, you can remove the smog pump on a Ford E-350 with a 351W engine, but it's important to check local emissions regulations first, as removing emissions control devices may be illegal in some areas. If you proceed, you'll need to block off any vacuum lines and exhaust ports that were connected to the smog pump. Additionally, you may need to adjust the engine's tuning or replace the exhaust manifold if it has provisions for the smog pump. Always consider consulting a professional mechanic for this modification.
loosen altinator, loosen smog pump, take smog pump belt loose, then take altinator belt over smog pump belt and over fan
I have a 1998 Mustang Cobra and my secondary AIR pump (smog pump) is located in front of the right front wheel. You might have to loosen/remove the plastic fender well liner to get to it. They are notorious for getting water in the cover that covers the smog pump motor. I'll bet yours is full of water. I have replaced mine twice and it is bad again. I recommend installing a "snorkel" hose to prevent this from happening again.
