But at lower speeds, in high gear, the engine power available to propel the car diminishes. This leads to the O/D overdrive button in some vehicles. This mode is typically used when towing or driving in hilly or mountainous areas. Since the power diminishes as lower speeds, in high gear, the transmission needs to compensate when driving under these two conditions. The trans will try to match the best gear with power available at various engine speeds and vehicle speeds.
