I was quoted $2650 today (Christian Brothers, Little Rock, AR) after paying $120 "diagnosis fee". Elected to look elsewhere -- I can purchase a new compressor for $275-325.00 -- it's replacement is simlpe (see eHow for step-by-step instructions) and at least do that myself. I will then only have to recheck for any leaks (replace fittings/clamps as needed) and get the system recharged. I think by doing some of the work myself I can keep the expense down to $750-800.00.
Yes new units are much more efficient.
In order to replace a clutch on a Jetta, be prepared to pay at least $450.00 if you're getting it done professionally. It is much cheaper if you do it yourself.

Is it feasible and approximately how much will it cost to replace the air conditioner in my '91 Miata with a unit that does not use freon?
too much oil in system or compressor not working properly are some possibilities
I was just quoted $1,300 to replace front struts only (does not include rear struts.) Jetta GLI 2003 with 120,000+ miles.
An RV air conditioner works much like an air conditioner in any vehicle. It has a compressor and a condenser that operate in concert to cool the air. In an RV, the air conditioner runs off of a generator when the engine is off.
