The cam sensor is located on the serpentine belt side of the engine--on the left side, down pretty low---look for two wires running down below the water pump. The problem if you get a cam position sensor failure could be the sensor or the cam position magnet inside of the engine on a gear that goes by the sensor as the engine turns. If you take the sensor off you can move the engine around using a rachet on one of the nuts to see if the magnet has fallen out of it's plastic casing----on my car the casing just crumbled and the magnet fell into the engine. There is a web posting of how to replace the magnet thru the sensor hole by grinding the plastic housing and then by using JB epoxy to glue it into place. If you do it this way it takes about three hours if you take your time and about $10 instead of taking it to the dealer and it will cost you about $800 because they have to take the engine apart.
