The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
Typically, when the light flashes, its telling you that the engine is in a condition that could cause a catastrophic failure of the catalytic converter. It could be a spark plug but could also be a coil or even more bizarre problems. When the computer detects a condition/miss like this, it shuts down the injector that belongs to the cylinder that's misfiring. I've had a Ford Taurus throw miss codes after replacing plugs and coils. Turned out it was the alternator going bad and probably flooding the system with AC voltage.
When ever the service engine light is blinking you risk doing serious damage to the catalytic converter. I would recommend not using the vehicle until the problem is fixed. Replacing the cat can be very expensive. Have a trusted mechanic diagnose and correct the engine problem.
A blinking Check Engine light indicates a serious problem with the emissions system. Have this repaired immediately.

A "Blinking" light typically means that something SEROUS has been detected. Use a code scanner to detect the problem.
If your check engine light is blinking that means an engine cylinder misfire has been detected - have the vehicle scanned for any trouble code(s) to help diagnose and then repair the problem
