Definitely a boon. Can't see how it would be a curse. With everything there is the potential for misuse, but anything that liberates people, brings people together, and helps people become more free cannot be bad in the long run. Entire countries are becoming free because the internet opens people up to the world. A few bad apples here in there don't change that - and those bad apples were probably around long before the internet.
