Replacing a tail light can be a little more complicated than replacing a headlight. Even so, it is a procedure that almost anyone who can use a screwdriver can accomplish successfully. Separate Bulbs for Separate Functions The thing that makes tail light replacement a little complicated is that there are usually two or three different tail light bulbs. There is a bulb for the standard tail light that shines whenever you turn on your lights. There is another bulb that shines more brightly when you apply the brakes. Another bulb will shine white when you put the vehicle in reverse, and yet another light blinks when you use your turn indicator. The first step in tail light replacement is to determine which of the lights needs to be replaced. The best way to do this is to stand behind the car and have a friend go through all of the different procedures to light each type of tail light separately. Remove the Entire Tail Light Fixture on Older Cars Cars that are more than 10 years old will probably need to have the entire tail light section removed so that you can replace the tail light. This should be easy to do with a standard screwdriver. Find all of the little screws along the top and sides of the tail light and remove them one by one. After you remove the tail light itself, put the screws back into their holes so that you will be able to find them when you are ready to put the new tail light on. You can find replacement tail light assemblies at most retail auto parts stores. Just Replace the Bulb on Newer Cars Newer cars allow you to simply remove the small bulb from behind the tail light lens and replace it with another small bulb. Open the trunk and pull back the carpeting behind your tail light. You should find a plastic cover that pops off. Behind the cover, the tail light bulb is pressed through a hole into the tail light lens. Pull the bulb out and take it to an auto parts store to find a replacement. Plug the new bulb in and you are ready to go.
Top two reasons; 1) the light bulb is burnt out, or 2) the wire harness isn't fully attached to the light socket.
The number on the top of a light bulb indicates the wattage of the bulb, which is a measure of the amount of power the bulb consumes. This can give you an idea of how bright the light will be and how much energy it will use.
