The fact that your passenger side brake light IS working is good news. That means that the brake light circuit is working [fuse, brake light switch, wiring to the back of the vehicle, etc.].
Because the rest of the system works when the driver's side doesn't tell us that the problem is between the point in the wiring harness where the harness "splits" to go to the left and right brake light assemblies, AND that the problem is IN that left side.
Without doing a "hands-on troubleshooting" of your vehicle no one can precisely tell you what the defect is. You will need to check that portion of the wiring system and find/identify the fault, and repair it.
There could be several causes for this and here are the ones that come to my mind at the moment:

brakelight switch, it is located under the steering column, and above the brake pedal where it connects to the car there is a little plunger switch up there.

check the brakelight switch. it is located under the dash where the brake pedal rests. Hey its ritchie. If you can click your blinker down and then they work its you blinker switch, but this is my monte.
Look for a fuse labeled TAIL LIGHTS. There are 2 separate circuits, one for brake turn and flasher and the other is for tail lights.
Check the fuse box, also make sure that wire which going along the hinge on the driver's side is not damaged.
tail lights circuit
It could be a blown fuse. Tail lights and brake/turn are on separate fuses. Apparently there is not a ground problem since brake/turn works OK.
On a toyota tacoma 2003 SR5 when the tail lights are turned on the brake lights come on and when the tail lights are of the brake lights work just fine what could be the problem. If the truck has a trailer plug, inspect the plug and plug wiring for damage and corrosion.
Are you saying your tail lights themselves do not work and only the brake lights work. If that is the case, check the fuse, and then check the tail light bulbs.
its on different bulbs
Check your fuses.
