It could be anything from not closing your gas cap tight enough to major engine problems. In my experience, it has always been some kind of sensor that has gone bad. You might want to check your oil levels. Just take it in, have it looked at and take care of it.
The check engine light has nothing to do with the washer fluid. If the check engine light is on you need to have it checked for codes with a scanner.

What engine light? If you are referring to the check Engine Light, then the computer has detected a problem that effects the emissions controls.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
If you fix the reason the light came on in the first place the check engine light will reset itself after a few drive cycles.
