REAL SHORT distance YES. But all the time NO... It will burn up the steering gear box. BAD IDEAL.
Short in the wiring with the steering column.
Most commonly the power steering fluid is located on the left front of the engine (as you are sitting in the drivers seat) in a usually black colored reservoir with a twist cap and a short dipstick attached to the bottom of the cap to check fluid level with engine off.
When the power steering fluid is low, you may experience some, all, or none, of the following symptoms:squealing or buzzing sounds associated with steering action.sticking or 'jumpy' steering wheel.lack of steering power (more effort required to turn the steering wheel).
In short, no. Cars designed to be driven WITH power steering are unsafe to drive when the power steering system has failed. If you've lost steering due to a broken belt, I suppose it might be safer to drive it that way than to park on a busy highway shoulder.

I think the short is located in the power control module
Yes. The bellhousing from Olds to Chevy is different. If you want to use the Olds trans., you will need an adaptor. Kenne Bell used to make one. Get headers for a Chevelle, of the same year, if this is a skylark, or cutlass. I think you wil have to run the short rocker box's, (valve covers) as I recall an issue with the wiper motor. You may have some issues with the front bracketry. Try to run all the stock Chevy brackets, you can. I would guess power steering, and alternator, would be about it. I believe both of those ar the same Chevy units, anyway. So, it should not be too much of a problem.
It will quite possibly, as with all electronics, cause a short and, maybe with automobiles, cause the steering wheel to explode.
front right hand top side, has a belt drive, look for the hoses that go from the power steering fluid reservoir to the pump just a short distance away. the air conditioning compressor is below the power steering pump.
Central Hydraulic Fluid or CHF for short
It has to be changed because the oil will get into your alternater and it will be toast in a short period of time
