if my engine is running great at 140,000 miles, why would i need to change the timing belt? is there any symptoms that would tell me that the timing belt is worn and in need of replacement? In other words, why change the timing belt if the engine is running fine?
Because over time the belt stretches and becomes loose on the splines. The engine doesn't run as efficiently and if the belt ever breaks you are stuck somewhere and have no choice but to be towed to get the car off the road. Not only that but if that belt ever breaks you will totally mess up the timing between the Crank and the heads and that just makes it harder and more expensive to repair the car if and when the problem occurs. Better to do preventive maintenance than to be stuck somewhere and based on my experience with Chrysler products, you don't want to neglect anything.
If your Chrysler has the 3.0L V6, most years are non-interference engines. This means that if the belt breaks, it will not do damage to your motor. You put a new belt on, start it up and drive away (with a bit of work). Its also a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time (saves labor). The water pump on the 3.0 is timing belt driven.
If you have a 3.3L or 3.8L V6, you have a timing chain. These chains last a lot longer than a belt, and over time and heat can still wear some.
When you open your hood, you will see Either Chrysler 3 Litre, 3.3, or 3.8 stamped on the top of your motor. I don't recall the Chrysler Town and Country ever having a four cylinder engine. If still unsure which motor you have, consult a dealer.
No start, no compression.
No start.
engine cranks over but will not start.
No start, internal engine damage.
how can you tell if a timing belt is bad
There are no symptoms. The belt will just suddenly break. The belt must be changed every 90,000 miles. This is an interference engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Neglect this service at your own risk.
There are no symptoms. The belt will just break without warning. You must replace the belt every 60,000 miles. Warning: This is an interference engine so if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage.
Timing belts do not slowly go bad and lead to worsening symptoms. One minute the belt is fine, the next, it snaps and the car won't run. It is possible for the belt to jump a gear tooth if it is not installed properly, but this is apparent as soon as the new timing belt is on and you try to start the engine to test it out. If the car won't start, it might be the battery or starter motor (it would sound weak) try these first If your car still won't start, it might be the timing belt, or the fuel filter (or pump)
Yes a timing belt can make it run bad the vale timing gould be off an the cam will be in re tard timing
One of the symptoms of a broken timing belt is the very loud sound that comes from the vehicle when you try to turn it on. Even though it is loud, the car will not start.
If I recall correctly. When a timing belt goes bad it just go...
NO! This has no effect on the timing belt.
