Turn it to the left which will be counterclockwise.
find the distributor and at the bottom of it there is a bolt that you loosen that loosens the hold down plate that keeps it tight against the engine block, once you loosen the bolt the distributor will turn right or left, start the engine and then slowly turn the distributor one way or the other until you hear the engine RPM increase, when it increases you are advancing the timing.
it depends on how far it is off . sometimes it requires removing and repositioning the distributor. if it is not much you may loosen the bolt that holds the distributor down and adjust the distributor left or right in order to advance or retard the timing. you will also need a timing light and a grease pencil preferably white in order to mark the timing scale on the flywheel pulley with the right degree for your car. usually two people are better than one since the vehicle will have to be running and always be careful leaning over a running motor not to catah your clothing or body parts (be carefull).
Loosen the 2 screws holding the distributor on and turn it left or right depending on the needed adjustment.
move the distributor cap left or right .... facing the car. left will speed up the timing and right will slow it down this will also affect your MPG.
It does not have a timing sensor. It has a electronic timing controll module under the distributor cap on the left side of the distributor base plate.
This requires a timing light You're supposed to put a jumper wire between the ground terminal and the test switch terminal of the diagnostic connector plug before adjusting the timing. The connector plug is on the firewall under the hood, next to the coil. If you look at the socket straight on with the plastic catch on the left, ground is the lower right hole, test switch is right above it. Then hook up the timing light. The distributor is held in place by two bolts in adjustment slots. Rotate the distributor clockwise to retard timing, counterclockwise to advance timing.
350 Chevy firing order and direction1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 The distributor spins clockwise. Turning the distributor counter-clockwise will advance the timing AnswerListed on the intake manifold. The firing order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. 1,3,5,7 are on the left side (driver's) and the right side is 2,4,6,8. The distributor turns clockwise.
1-3-4-2. No. 1 is farthest from the distributor, so looking at the engine from the front the timing belt is to the left (no. 1) and the distributor is to the right (no. 4). The cylinders read left-to-right as 1-2-3-4.
When standing on the passanger side looking at the distributor the top right plug is cylinder one (the cylinder closest to the distributor). The top left plug on the distributor is cylinder two. The bottom left plug is cylinder three. Finally the bottom left plug is cylinder four (the cylinder furthest from the distributor, closest to the timing gear). Hope this helps.
Through the carburetor or advance or retard the distributor by turning the distributor cap barely left or right. If you cant turn it then loosen the bolt holding the distributor on to the intake with a wrench then turn the distributor til the engine sounds like its not missing or not to where it's about to turn off.
The timing for this type of distributor is set by rotating the entire distributor, not just the cap. The distributor should have a lock down bolt holding it down where it sets in a housing. With the engine NOT running, mark the original position of the distributor with a marker or some white paint. Then you loosten the hold down bolt a little, then see if you can turn the entire distribuor very slowly just a little bit. If it turns a little, then you can hook up your timing light paying attention to the cautions and warnings in the instructions for the timing light or the auto manual being used to set the timing. You start the engine, and slowly turn the entire distributor left or right until the desired timing is reached. Turn off the engine, then tighten the distributor back down. That's pretty much it in a nutshell!
Connect timing light. remove vacuum line and plug to put engine in base timing. loosen the Distributor hold down, turn the dist. left or right to set it with the timing light. tighten the hold down. replace line. White out makes it easier to see the timing marks. the stock timing is 10 degrees
