Hand tight is usually all that is required. I recommend turning it 3/4 turn after making contact with the mounting surface. That way it is tight enough but not too tight.

Grip filter very tightly an twist counter-clockwise, 1/3 of a turn, pause and allow any dripping oil to fall into drain pan or other approved container. Continue turning an place your filter into pan to drain out. Prep area by cleaning filter seat ( bottom of the motor) with the same rag as used to wipe off the filter earlier. Fill filter 1/4-1/2 full (to make sure the engine has oil on the start, dry start=damage!) any slight spillage is okay use some of that to rub around the rubber O-ring atop the filter.
