It has to be done on a machine. just putting fluid through it doesn't work. If the torque converter is still in the car you can check for a drain plug and drain it, refill it and run it to circulate new fluid and then redrain and refill. If there is no drain plug you can drill a hole and tap into the case to put a small pipe plug back in. Many of the aftermarket people do this.
