Low octane fuel, timing to far advanced, overheating.
what causes my corola dx wagon with a 5e engine to ping
A bad knock sensor would illuminate the check engine light and allow the engine to ping (spark knock). The engine doesn't shift, the transmission shifts.
Ping under acceleration or under load.
If the knock sensor failed the CEL (Check Engine Light) would be illuminated and the engine may "ping" or "spark knock" under load. Serious "spark knock" can damage the engine if allowed to continue.
The knock sensor retards the engine timing when there is a knock or ping detected. This will make the car a little sluggish. It is rare that the knock sensor goes bad.
Allowing an engine to ping excessively can do serious damage.
And engine knock is normally caused but I worn crankshaft bearing or rod bearing.
You can drive the car but if the engine should ping (knock) under load, the knock sensor won't be able to tell the computer to retard the timing. Excessive pinging can damage internal engine parts.
The knock sensor detects spark knock (ping) and sends that info to the ECM. The ECM makes timing adjustments to stop the ping.
The knock sensor detects spark knock or ping.
The knock sensor detects spark knock (aka ping), sends that signal to the engine control module (ECM), the ECM retards the timing until the spark knock stops.
