Put the transmission in neutral or push the clutch in and then stop the car. When stopped, turn the ignition off.
are you sure you have the hubs locked in? if automatic hubs then it probably needs manual hubs put in. You have to be stopped and transmission in neutral

well you can do you turn the car off after or do you just do it at stop lights? If you put it in neutral at stop lights and signes and then put in gear to drive it add wear to your transmision. Just leave it in drive when driveing.
I doubt it is a transmission problem. It sounds like the engine is in need of some attention maybe even some motor mounts.
The "awful grinding sound" might be a problem with your power steering
