You may have either a timing problem or the firing order is not right. With the engine on top dead center and the timing mark on zero, the rotor should be pointed at the number one electrode on the dist. The firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 . It turns clockwise. Check that first to see if you have a wire wrong. If that's not the problem, check the timing with a timing light. If it still backfires, you've probably got a valve not seating properly, or worse, the cam is not timed with the crank just right.
