The front and rear brakes are both made of ceramic. i bought front and rear brakes on eBay for $80 total.
Wheel cylinder (drum brakes) or caliber (disc brakes) sticking. If you find this to be the case you need to replace both sides and replace your brake fluid which is contaminated with moisture.

Squealing brakes in a sign of worn out brake pads or shoes. Can also be leaking wheel cylinder. Suggestion: Remove the rear wheels and find out what is going on. defective brakes is a safety hazard.
Front brakes wear faster than rear brakes because they bear a greater portion of the vehicle's weight and are responsible for most of the braking force during stops. This increased workload causes them to wear down more quickly than the rear brakes.
in VW's when you have the breaks adjusted out too far they tend to grab when reversing. There is an auto adjuster in the rear drum to keep your rear brakes adjusting. If the brakes are worn out they will "hang up" after reverse and cause squeeling.
