You STILL Haven't Found the Cause

No one on this site can tell you the precise cause of your problem because we cannot do a "hands on troubleshooting" of the circuit involved. You or someone who knows what they are doing has to troubleshoot that circuit.

  • The situation you describe suggests one or more of the following causes:
  • A connector somewhere in the wiring for that circuit has become disconnected.
  • Road film or corrosion has invaded a connector and "broken" the circuit.
  • A wire in that circuit has become cut or broken.
  • A wire in that circuit has become pinched in the body sheet metal, or the insulation chaffed off, allowing the wire to short circuit to the vehicle's grounded sheet metal.

There is a "split" in the wiring harness from the brake light switch to the rear brake light assemblies. Because of your use of the plural [bulbs, fuses, brakes] I suspect that the open circuit condition is located between the brake light switch and that split in the wiring harnesses to the individual brake lights.

To change the brakes on an '88 Jeep, start by safely lifting the vehicle and removing the wheel. Remove the caliper bolts, take off the caliper, and replace the brake pads. For the ABS pressure switch, locate it on the brake line or master cylinder, disconnect the electrical connector, and unscrew the switch. Will a bad brake light switch cause shift lever to jamb?

yes. many late model automatics require you to have the brakes on, before shifting into gear..... the auto uses the brake switch to "unlock" the the shifter when the brakes are on... ergo.... switch is faulty, then the auto won't "unlock"
