If your Powerglide transmission is leaking fluid from the breather, it typically indicates that the transmission is overfilled or that there's excessive pressure buildup within the system. This can occur due to a blockage in the vent or a malfunctioning component, such as a failed seal or valve. It's important to check the fluid level and condition, and if the problem persists, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is recommended to prevent further damage. Addressing the issue promptly can help ensure the longevity and proper function of your transmission.
The shop that rebuilt my '54 Powerglide recommended Dexron III.
Use Dexron 2 A/T Fluid.
10 1/2 quarts
4 quarts.
Breather is provided where the oil tends to give out fumes after getting heated. in a fluid coupling the fluid is not heated upto that temperature hence not required
"Why is your Breather tube for the transfer case blowing out transmission fluid in your 1998 Chevy SIlverado Z71?" Check the level of fluid, it is most likely overfilled. Heat will expand the fluids, that's why there is a certain fill point. The breather tube is to let air out from the expansion of fluid, and to let air back in when fluid cools. "Hence" A Breather Tube 70 GTO Judge And a whole lot of other GMs
If you have a 2 speed Powerglide A/T use Dexron 3 or a Synthetic.
