What is a viscous coupling in a 4 wheel drive?

It is a fluid coupling using a viscous (thicker type) fluid, similar to the coupling between the drive and driven impeller of an automatic transmission in a car.

What is fluid coupling?

A fluid coupling is a hydrodynamic device used to transmit rotating mechanical power. It has been used in automobile transmissions as an alternative to a mechanical clutch. It also has widespread application in marine and industrial machine drives, where variable speed operation and/or controlled start-up without shock loading of the power transmission system is essential. They are also sometimes called a Fluid Flywheel.

Why is your Breather tube for the transfer case blowing out transmission fluid in your 1998 Chevy Silverado Z71?

"Why is your Breather tube for the transfer case blowing out transmission fluid in your 1998 Chevy SIlverado Z71?" Check the level of fluid, it is most likely overfilled. Heat will expand the fluids, that's why there is a certain fill point. The breather tube is to let air out from the expansion of fluid, and to let air back in when fluid cools. "Hence" A Breather Tube 70 GTO Judge And a whole lot of other GMs

Comparison between fluid coupling and torque converter?

They are of similar design, but a fluid coupling simply transmits torque (with some frictional loss), while a torque converter amplifies torque, similar to a reduction gear.

Why fluid coupling is used?

Fluid couplings are used extensively in automatic transmissions. This allows the car to stop while still remaining in gear. Also used for the smoothness that transfers the power from the driver to the driven member very smoothly in various power equipment.

What is scoop coupling?

Scoop coupling is nothing but a fluid coupling works based on the hydro dynamic principle. Scooping is the collecting the oil from the working chamber(space between pump wheel and turbine wheel) which will effects the transmission.
