One is higher than the other... Yes they call me Einstein.
The Chevy Avalanche typically comes equipped with one horn. However, some models may have a dual horn system for enhanced sound. The horn's design and location can vary depending on the specific model year and trim level.
Any note can be a half note, as long as it is held for two full counts. This applies to any instrument.
If it is the same as the 2010 Silverado, there is only one horn which is located in the below the drivers side front headlight. To get to it, you must remove the headlight by removing the 2 or 3 screws and then pulling it straight forward away from the truck. The horn is held in by a single screw but be forwarned -- the horn has a new style connector. Instead of the single or dual prong connectors, it has a dual circular connector so your choices of "plug in" horns will be limited.

No, check the connections, INCLUDING THE GROUND CONNECTION, first. If that isn't it, you'll need a new high horn.
If you have a single horn, it's fingers 1 and 2 for A natural, and fingers 2 and 3 for A flat. If you have a double horn, you can add the thumb key to open the B flat side of the horn.
I don't have one at the time but the horn themselve are located in front of the radiator. The low note is behind the head lights and the high note horn is mounted on the frame in between the head lights. Plus this location should be approximetely the same for a 78'.
Attack any note, being sure not to begin the note cleanly. Hold it for two full counts. Then stop.
