The torque convertor acts as an automatic clutch for the transmission. If you are replacing the transmission, I would recommend replacing the convertor too, especially if the trans fluid is burnt or contaminated. If you have a manual transmission, run, there is no torque convertor :)
It could be that the torque convertor is locked and not slipping which it should do as the normal operation
yes, for most repairs
if the trans is completely empty including the torque convertor about 12 quarts if you are just doing the pan 5 quarts
Have the torque convertor clutch in the trans checked out for slippiing.
dont use OD unless you are travelling over 55 for more than a mile solenoid is under side cover of trans pain to fix. in town or stop and go use Drive or number 3 depending on display. Trans only has 3 gears OD locks torque convertor to give feel of another gear but it is still in 3rd gear with out any slip action. torque convertor in direct drive mode.
5 qts in the trans plus 2.4 qts if you drain the torque convertor. do not fill all at once or will come out overflow. put 5 qts in, start engine and shift through gears while parked to fill torque convertor, then fill the rest. Torque convertor has a drain plug accessible through rubber plugs in bell housing. bump starter until it lines up. The stock fluid can be replaced with a premium synthetic fluid with better results than the overpriced sprinter atf.
May be a bad trans TRS sensor. Many went bad in the 98's P1744 means TCC (Torque convertor clutch) mechanical noise or stuck in off position. Lock up type convertor. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=535091&highlight=P1744.
amsoil torque synthic
You have to put it on the trans input shaft 1st & keep it at a slight downward angle to keep it from falling off. Then mate them (trans/block)& hand thread bolts-block. Then line up holes convertor/flex & put 1 bolt through to keep them that way (turn convertor if needed). Fully tighten bell housing, then you can turn crank bolt to get the other 2 in. If you attach to flexplate first, it will be hard to get trans on & may damage input shaft. It's much easier to turn converter on trans.
Hey Shannon==The torque convertor solonoid is probably bad. Take it to the trans shop and have it checked out. GoodluckJoe+
could be not actualy in gear inspect shift cable also torque convertor may be bad
