It does depend on if it is the old flat head valve engines, or the new over-head valve engines, which is because of the new EPA laws....all flat heads use 30 hd... the over-head valve engines 10-w30, although prefrence is your own, Briggs & Strattons oil is actually Mobil 1, ( I seen that when I toured Briggs & Strattons factory while working for Central Distributors of Briggs.) Briggs & Stratton recommends the use of SAE 30w detegent oil with an automotive rating of "SJ" or higher when ambient air temperatures are 40 degrees or higher. Under 40 degrees it is acceptable to use a 10w-30 or 5w-30 depending on the weather, but air cooled engines run hotter than liquid cooled so check and change oil frequently. It is also acceptable to use a SYNTHETIC 5w-30 oil year round, but the oil must be changed as often as regular engine oil.
