No. 2008 highlander has a aluminum filter housing you need to remove with a special type of filter wrench. I was able to tap mine loose without a wrench but it could be at 24n-m tight which is difficult to loosen.
Just unscrew the filter. If you cannot remove it with your hands, it was put on too tight, which is common, as most people tighten them too much. You will need to use a good filter wrench. The type wrench you will need depends on how much room you have. Oil the gasket & Put the new filter back on and only tighten it 3/4 turn after the filter makes contact with the mounting surface. By doing this you will not need a filter wrench when removing the filter next time. 3/4 turn is plenty tight and any more is too much.Just unscrew the filter. As you face the front of the vehicle, the drain plug is on the left side of the engine. The oil filter is on the right side (driver's side). You will need to lift the driver's side of the vehicle slightly to access the oil filter. The engine cover must be partially removed to access the filter. You need remove only 4-5 screws (a 10mm socket wrench or box wrench is better than using a Phillips screwdriver to remove these). Once you remove these screws, you can pull down the cover and access the filter. An oil filter wrench (cup type that a 3/8ths socket wrench fits into) that fits over the end of the filter is the easiest way to remove the filter. When you put the new filter on, be sure to wipe some oil on the gasket. Hand tighten it, then turn it no more than a quarter of a turn with the wrench. You will need 14mm wrench to remove the drain plug. Be sure to recycle the used oil. Plan for 5+ quarts of oil.
That will vary depending on the type of contaminate. Some contaminates cannot be removed with chemicals (e.g. metal particles - these need to be removed with a filter).

On the underside of the bike, near the front, there is a panel with 3 bolts. Remove the panel, then you'll need an oil filter wrench (the kind where you attach a socket wrench to the top). Be sure to remove the old o-ring before you replace the filter, otherwise the panel will crack when you go to screw it back on.
You need to have a special filter wrench to do it, which is a cup-type as opposed to a band-type. Filter is cartridge not spin-on.
