2011
General Motors began using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) in its Duramax diesel engines starting with the 2011 model year. This was part of the implementation of the EPA's stricter emissions standards, which aimed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The use of DEF helps improve the overall efficiency and environmental performance of the engine.
General Motors began using Allison transmissions in its Duramax diesel engine trucks starting in 2001. The partnership aimed to enhance the performance and reliability of GM's heavy-duty pickup trucks. The Duramax engine, paired with the Allison transmission, has been a key feature in GM's heavy-duty truck lineup since then.
Dodge started using the 5.9L Cummins engine in the 1989 model year.
Remove the fuel filter, fill it with fuel... IIRC, the Duramax has an electric fuel pump... cycle the key in the "on" position a couple times to let it prime. This is, of course, assuming that, when you say "gas", you actually mean #2 Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, which is the only fuel you should be using for that engine, especially if it's 2007 or newer. If you ran that diesel engine on gas you probably destroyed the engine. That's why it won't start.
To set the idle on a Duramax diesel engine, first ensure the engine is at operating temperature. Using a diagnostic scan tool, navigate to the idle speed adjustment menu, if available, or consult the vehicle’s service manual for specific idle speed specifications. Adjust the idle speed using the tool or by adjusting the throttle position sensor, if applicable. Always verify the idle speed after adjustments to ensure it is within the manufacturer's recommended range.
To start the engine
The 2013 Duramax 6.6L engine requires approximately 10 quarts of oil when using a standard oil filter. If you are using a larger oil filter, the capacity may increase slightly, but it's always best to check the owner’s manual for the exact specifications. Make sure to use the recommended oil type for optimal performance.
Ford did not start using the 5.4 in the F-150 until the 1997 model year
Smoke is just unburned fuel, too much smoke is not good for the engine. Anything that causes the engine to run rich, or have more fuel in the fuel to air ratio will make it smoke. You can either put in more fuel by using a better lift pump, or using better injectors, or you can starve the engine of air (not recommended) by unhooking the turbo or putting a paper bag over the air filter. Smoke is just wasted power, a truck that burns all this extra fuel runs much faster. Note that the fastest duramax in the world blows little to no smoke.

The oil capacity for a 2007 Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel engine is approximately 10 quarts (9.5 liters) when using a standard oil filter. It's important to consult the owner's manual for specific recommendations and to check the oil level after filling, as variations may occur based on the oil filter used.
