The spring goes into the engine block.
The extended side goes in the block.
Usually the side with the spring goes to the engine side.
A thermostat always goes in spring side toward the engine.

Follow the upper rad hose from the rad to the engine and you will find it at the end of the hose, when replacing the thermostat, make sure the spring goes toward the enigne. It is under Thermostat Houseing. Just follow top rad.Hose away from Rad. Its under the houseing that the hose connects to on motor side of hose.
The previous answer is incorrect! The 3.0 and 3.3 liter engines used in all the Mercury Villagers and Nissan Quests from 1993-2002 have the thermostat installed just the opposite of most all other engines. The spring side of the thermostat goes into the thermostat housing not the engine block as was previously stated below. Flat Side Outward, Spring Side Toward Engine
