A cam belt spins the cams in the exact timing sequence for the valves to open, it is considered part of the internal engine workings and is absolutely necessary for operation. A fan belt operates the cooling fan and maybe other accesories such as power steering and air conditioning, it is on the outside of the motor.
A serpentine belt is one belt that runs all engine accessories (i.e. power steering pump, ac compressor, water pump, AND fan). A fan belt runs the fan only.
Yes , the fan belt drives the engine accessories , the timing belt is used to keep the engine crankshaft and pistons " in time " with the camshaft and valves
The fan belt drives the fan, water pump, alternator, power steering, air conditioner and air pump... if the vehicle has all of these. The fan belt (often a serpentine belt) can slip without any real problem other than a little noise. The cam belt (timing belt) looks quite different and only drives the camshaft. The timing belt is designed to keep the camshaft and crankshaft in perfect synchronization. The timing belt has "lugs", or specially designed bumps in the belt that align with slots in the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley. To protect the timing belt from grease, mud and other hazards, the timing belt is usually behind a fairly significant protective cover.
The cam belt which works the water pump. Cheers. Donna
no as they have different names. No, the cam belt drives the engine cam and possibly water pump on some vehicles. The drive belt or serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, A/C compressor, & cooling fan on some vehicles.
No, your Ford uses a timing chain to drive the cam.
A supercharger runs off a belt driven directly from the engine where as the turbo runs off a belt driven by a fan in the exhaust
Support the engine, remove cam belt covers and top engine mount. Remove serpentine belt then crankshaft pulley to expose cambelt. Lock the engine flywheel, fuel pump sprocket and cam sprocket. Loosen tensioner and remove belt. Fit new belt, set tension, remove locking tools then rotate engine twice by hand to check the timing holes align. If good, refit everything. If not, reset timing and check again.
REMOVE THE SINGLE DRIVE BELT, THEN REMOVE THE 4 MOUNTING BOLTS BETWEEN THE FAN AND THE BELT PULLEY. THE FAN MIGHT NEED TO BE WIGGLED OFF
no
There is no fan belt it is an electric fan. Are you referring to the serpentine belt?
If it is a serpentine belt the automatic tensioner will adjust the belt for you. If it is an older "V" type belt--there should be 1/2" "play" at the middle of the belt, between the pulleys.
