The factory recommends 10w40 non-stnthetic gear or but 75w90
You can use 10-30 engine oil in the manual gearbox, however Honda did later release a better gearbox oil with friction modifiers - Honda MTF - recommended! I'm unsure for automatics, Honda ATF is the obvious choice but the type (dexron II / dexron III etc) I'm unsure about.
The 1997 Honda Civic gearbox has a fluid capacity of 4.8 quarts. You can check the gearbox fluid level with the gearbox dipstick.

there is no best but any EP rated oil will kill your gearbox. It eats away the brass. go to the forum at www.mirafiori.com and view the many discussion threads on the best gearbox oil.
The car should come with a manual which lists the type of oil to be used an how often it should be changed. The Honda CR V, manufactured in 2006, requires 5w20 motor oil.
for starters....is it manual or automatic,,,,big difference......on a manual,,,you have to get under the car to to the gearbox,,,,,then find the gearbox plug bolt,,,then fill the gearbox to that level....automatic is very different
