The cause of the clunking is probably the sway bar link. They are made of white platic and eventually wear out. Both sides were shot on my 2001 Taurus at 75,000 miles. You could try testing the hub. lift car and shake tire. if it shakes you need a new hub. My 1998 Taurus has a tortion/sway bar in the back. There is a rod that holds the end of the tortion bar in place. I had a thumping noise and found out that the end of that rod had broken off. The rod was about $10.00 at the local auto part store. It was very easy to replace. Jack up car, remove rear wheel and then the rod has rubber bushings and a nut at each end to hold it on.
