The 97-98 Mark VIII used a coil on plug system. There is no distributor and subsequently, no spark plug wires. On the valve covers you will see a panel that is held to the top of each cover with two 10mm bolts. On the drivers side you can simply loosen the bolts and remove the panel exposing the coils. Carefully unplug each coil connector and then very carefully pull the coil up and out of the valve cover. Then you will need a 5/8 spark plug socket and a 10" extension to reach all the way down to the plug. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS WHEN THE ENGINE IS EVEN SLIGHTLY WARM!!!! Only remove plugs when the engine is completely cold! Use anti seize on the threads of the new plugs being installed, and dielectric grease on the top of each plug where the coil will plug onto it. Gap the plugs at .056. On the passenger side of the engine you will have to remove the air intake tube before you can get the panel covering the coils off. The intake tube is held on by two clamps, one at the air filter box at the front of the vehicle and the other at the throttle body. Before trying to pull the tube out after loosening the clamps, you need to unplug the electrical connector on the sensor and the tube for the PCV valve which are both protruding from the air intake tube. DO not over-tighten the plugs when installing and make absolutely certain that the air intake tube is reinstalled with NO distortions in the rubber seals at each end wherer the clamps go, and make sure the clamps are TIGHT! Any sort of air leak at these clamps will result in a poor running car.

How do you change spark plugs in a 1997 Lincoln mark 8?

To change the spark plugs in a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII, first ensure the engine is cool, then disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the engine cover and locate the spark plug wires, gently pulling them off the plugs. Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to unscrew the old plugs, then install the new ones by hand to avoid cross-threading, and tighten them to the manufacturer’s specified torque. Reconnect the spark plug wires and battery terminal, and replace the engine cover.

Why does your 97 Lincoln mark 8 turn over but wont start?

If your 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII turns over but won't start, it could be due to several issues. Common causes include a faulty fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a dead battery. Additionally, problems with the ignition system, such as worn spark plugs or a malfunctioning ignition coil, could prevent the engine from starting. It's advisable to check for fuel delivery, spark, and error codes to diagnose the issue accurately.
