To add oil to a 1997 Acura SLX, open the hood and locate the engine oil filler cap, which is typically marked with an oil can symbol. Remove the cap and use a funnel to pour in the appropriate type and amount of oil, as specified in the owner's manual. After adding oil, replace the cap securely and check the oil level with the dipstick to ensure it's within the recommended range.
You will find that info in the drivers manual.
It requires an oil that meets the 505.01 spec. This can also be replaced with an oil meeting VW's 507.00 spec. You can purchase this oil at your local dealer. Castrol SLX is the 5w30 505.01 and VW LL3 is the 5w30 507.00 oil. Some people are having good luck with high quality 5w40 CJ-4 engine oils, such as Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Delvac 1, but it doesn't carry the VW rating. Also, for a 507.00 oil, some Pepboys carry Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 that carries the rating.

Full (Syn) Synthetic Oil can be changed every 10,000 mile.Cost more but represents about 2 - 4000 mile oil changes. BMW recommend Full Syn in their cars. My BMW 740il maintenance schedule is every 10,000, No sluge, no knocks, no problems. I do not go as long. I go about 8000 in my 3 Series. Syn oil suspends the trash in the oil better than regular oil to allow the longer change interval. Plus, it does not break down under heat stress as fast as regular oil The mechanic usually give you the 4000 mile changes schedule for regular oil,and syn oil. This is how they make their money. Syn is the way to go especially if you car starts of with syn. Check this websit out for more on Syn. http://www.synthetic-motor-oil-change-and-filters.com/amsoil_articles/myths-of-synthetic-oils/
