Turn the engine to top dead center on #1 cylinder. Make sure your on the compression stroke. this can be done by covering the spark plug hole and quickly bumping the starter. when it blows your finger away its on the compression stroke. continue to move the engine slowly in the same direction until the piston is at the top. take the dist cap off and look at the rotor. Wherever its pointing will be the #1 position. It can actually be anywhere in the rotation depending on how the distributor was installed.
The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the FRONT / CENTER
The distributor cap should have the number 1 marked on it. The distributor cap is installed with the # 1 position facing the engine , slightly towards the drivers side of the engine
They don't have distributor caps they have coil packs. Some coil packs are labeled like 1-3 2-4
With hood open, standing on the passenger side, #1 on the distributor cap would be at the 10 O'clock position.
The spark plug firing order is ( 1 - 5 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 8 ) The distributor rotor turns COUNTERCLOCKWISE The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the REAR and slightly towards the drivers side The engine cylinder / spark plug locations are numbered : firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front
Most good quality caps have #1 labeled in a raised number.
Spark Plug Wires? Remove them 1 at a time from the spark plug to the distributor or the ION pack, remove and replace the spark plug, add the new spark plug wire from the newly added spark plug to the distributor or ION pack.
The spark plug firing order on your 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 is ( 1 - 5 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 4 ) The distributor rotor rotates CLOCKWISE The # 1 position , which should be marked on the distributor cap , is facing away from the engine . If the # 1 position is next to the engine the distributor cap is installed 180 degrees out , flip it around. Your engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered 1 to 6 going from front to rear on the engine
On your 2.9 L - V6 engine : The distributor cap is installed with the marked # 1 position facing towards the firewall and slightly towards the passenger side ------------------------------------------ Starting with the # 1 spark plug wire , go CLOCKWISE , ( 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 ) with the spark plug wires because the distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
what engine ? 2.5L 1-3-4-2 clockwise rotation on distributor, 3.9L 1-6-5-4-3-2 clockwise rotation on distributor, 5.2L 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise rotation on distributor
If you turn the engine to TDC on the compression stroke, the distributor rotor will point at the terminal for #1. Most distributors have a mark (usually a 1) on them under the cap to indicate the #1 position for the rotor to point at. The cap tower directly above the rotor point at this position is for the #1 spark plug.
The rotor inside the distributor should be pointing at the #1 spark plug.
