We just changed the fuel filter on our 2004 explorer 4.0L. It's located on the passenger side under the front seat and just inside the rail. Because it's located just outboard of the passenger side catalytic converter there are 2 shiields to remove -- an aluminum shield with 3 - 13 mm bolts and behind it a black plastic shield (labeled fuel filter) with 2 - 10 mm bolts. There are 2 lines - one in and one out. You will need a fuel line release tool to remove the input line (we used the Astro 7892 3/8 inch). The output side is held in place with an R-clip - no tools required. Good luck. Bob

On the 2004 ford explorer the fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the passenger side near the front of the gas tank, just behind the catalystic converter. There is a metal heat shield that must be removed before you can access the filter. After removing the heat shield there is a plastic protectant shield that must be removed, then you can get to the fuel filter.
