If it's a twin cam 1.5 engine the thermostat is at the front of the engine the radiator top hose is leading to it.To remove it there are two bolts holding the housing to the engine one bolt can be seen easily the other is hidden underneath.Remove the housing the stat is inside, now you must separate the two half's of the housing but is will be seized, soak it in realise fluid for a few hours.then carefully using two screw drivers or similar lever the two half's apart, inside is the thermostat. Before assembling clean the housing with a wire brush so the two half's go back together easily coat the parts of the housing that slide together with copper grease anti seize compound then re-assembly is reversal of removal.hope all this helps.note: you don't need to remove the timing belt or covers.
