when mine did that it was because the harmonic balancer (hb) pulley had gone bad and kept pushing the alternator belt off and breaking it. but fixed the hb pulley and started back up and as soon as i used the a/c the hb pulley blew, pushed the alt belt off and back to square one. now fixed a/c system lucky got a good deal, new hb pulley. new belts and all was fine for 15 months. now it just dies every once in a while, looking for answer on that one . no more belt problems though! 6/2009
I have a 97 Ford probe and when I had to replace my alternator... I had to pulled the passenger tire off and pull the whole assembly apart so I could get the alternator.. There are 2 bolts to loosen up and pull the belt out slide the alternator down by the exhaust and pull it out by the CV axle
take off the drivers side tire, then the plastic splash gaurd. alternator will be right there
To replace the alternator belt in a 1996 Ford Probe with a 2.0L engine, first, disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety. Then, locate the tensioner pulley and use a wrench to relieve tension on the belt. Remove the old belt and install the new one, ensuring it follows the correct routing path. Finally, reapply tension to the belt, check its alignment, and reconnect the negative battery cable.
Something is out of line. Check alternator, a/c pump, idler and tensioner. I've had 3 Taurus and never a single broken belt.
The alternator belt is classed as a "stretchy" belt by Ford and is not re-usable.
there are two belts. the alternator, a/c belt was replaced on my 95 probe by removing the radiator first. there is also an adjustable pulley with a vertical long bolt that is reverse threaded halfway down that adjusts the position of the pulley therefore changing belt tension. good luck
it's all one belt
The alternator is belt driven off the front of the engine.
Two reasons why your alternator belt is breaking is: Your alternator belt is too tight, or you are using a belt that is old and worn. I cannot answer your question fully without seeing the vehicle. Sorry.
Reasons: Cheap Belt Too tight
You have to install a new belt tensioner.
The belt turning the alternator which is recharging the battery.
