sounds like transmission problem it could be the lever but likely that the teeth on the gear for forward is strip and wont engage...take it to mechanic or take the crankcase transmission case off and play with the gear back and forth to see what its supposed to engage and look at the gear replace if needed...trust me its worth it to do it youself and its pretty easy..just takes some time prolly an 1.5hour!!

The torque converter and clutch are the point where the engine and the transmission engage.
The filter is up in the bottom of the transmission. You will have to take the transmission pan off of the bottom of the transmission to get to it.

In need to get shifter off to remove transmission
Shift the transmission into N first, then pull the transfer case into LO-LOC or HI-LOC, for a automatic trans, or 4HI, or 4LO for a manual transmission. Put transmission back into drive and take off. If your truck has manual locking hubs, they will need to be turned to LOCK to engage the front axle.
