check under the hood for loose hoses. if you change your own oil, the hose that connects the cruise control to the intake manifold is right where your elbow would be when removing the oil filter and can be easily bumped off. reconnecting a loose hose will IMMEDIATELY resolve the issue.
Valve adjustment needed is a possibility.

Our 1997 Honda accord has had the same problem two times. Get the coolant recharged at your mechanic. We have had no problems for several years afterward.
It could be a sticking valve lifter. If you didn't hear it before, it should be investigated. Ticking is not normal.
